About The Project
The old kitchen was a single dark run facing a wall. The family cooked around each other and ate in another room because the island did not exist. We turned the work zone toward the window, gave the sink a landing, and built an oak island that can take homework on one side and chopping on the other.
The Project Challenge
The sink stack and a boxed-in pipe limited the first sketch. Moving the sink would have consumed the budget they wanted to spend on the island and the light. We kept the stack, re-drew the landing space, and used a tall pantry to hide the daily clutter that had lived on the counters.
The Result
The room is now the place dinner starts and homework ends. Under-cabinet light covers the prep zone, the island has power for a laptop, and the painted cabinets are a calm backdrop for the oak. They kept one original window and gained a room they actually stay in.
- Sink stayed on the existing stack
- Oak island with seating and task power
- Painted perimeter cabinets
- New task lighting and a clear landing by the sink
